Why train yourself in NMD?

Currently in India, TMD is treated by surgeons. Although the pain of TMD would go away but the patient would become dysfunctional. This is very frustrating for both the patient as well as the surgeon. NMD is an answer to this as it is the right treatment for TMD as well as OSA.

NMD is a holistic approach with no pain during any part of the treatment. NMD focuses on the treatment of the cause of TMD (Occlusion) & OSA rather than giving symptomatic relief to the patient. NMD changes the occlusion to a more physiological Myocentric Occlusion relieving the condylar pressure from the retrodiscal pad in the TMJ space, thus eliminating the headache/neck-ache. Once the cause is cured by NMD, the patient will no longer be a patient.

NeuroMuscular dentistry is also useful in sports wherein a mouth guard (PPMTM) is built according to the person’s myocentric occlusion and is worn during the physical activity, thereby increasing his/her balance, strength and stamina.

Sadly, there are only a handful of NMD specialists practising in India and an even fewer number who possess the scanning machine. So getting trained in NMD would add to the advantage of being a specialist physician who treats TMD & OSA from the cause.

Even though NMD was invented in the 60’s and shot to prominence in the 90’s in India, there is still lack of awareness among patients and doctors alike. It needs to be popularised and practised more to give relief to the patients suffering from TMD or OSA.

However, NMD cannot treat patients who have reached ankylosis stage, where the two bones of the joint have fused, for which surgery is the only option.
